WHOOP 5.0 Review: Is the Upgrade from 4.0 Worth It? Battery, Prices, Differences (2026)

I wore the Whoop 4.0 every day for more than a year. When the Whoop 5.0 came out, the question wasn’t whether I’d upgrade — but whether it would be worth it.

Short answer: yes. With one caveat, which I’ll explain.

Transparency and status: The experience in this article is Max’s own; he wore the WHOOP 4.0 and then the WHOOP 5.0 (not the MG). Prices, battery figures and features are manufacturer data, last checked on 17 Oct 2026 against WHOOP’s German membership page, WHOOP support and The Verge’s launch report. Prices are for Germany. This is the English version of the German original. Sources are listed at the end. More on methodology

WHOOP 5.0 at a glance (as of October 2026)

  • Announced: 8 May 2025, together with the WHOOP MG.
  • Battery: 14 days or more according to WHOOP; Max charges it roughly every 10–12 days.
  • Price in Germany: membership only. WHOOP One €199/year, WHOOP Peak €264/year (with wireless PowerPack). The MG with ECG is only available on Life at €399/year.
  • No ECG: ECG, heart rhythm notifications and blood pressure insights are MG-only.
  • Upgrading from 4.0: according to WHOOP support, free with a 12-month extension or a one-off USD 49 (Peak). If you don’t switch, you keep the 4.0.
  • Bands: according to the WHOOP community, 4.0 bands don’t fit the 5.0. Everything about plans and bands is in WHOOP band 2026: models, prices, membership.

What’s new in the Whoop 5.0?

Whoop launched the fifth generation without a huge marketing blitz — the updates are subtle, but noticeable if you wear it all the time:

  • Much longer battery life — 14 days or more according to WHOOP, instead of 4–5 days on the 4.0. With the wireless PowerPack (Peak and Life) you charge on the wrist; according to The Verge the PowerPack holds roughly another 30 days of charge.
  • Smaller housing — 7% smaller than the 4.0 according to WHOOP, even less noticeable on the wrist
  • Revised sensors — according to WHOOP the sensors capture data about 26 times per second, and power efficiency is said to be ten times higher
  • New features depending on plan — Healthspan, stress monitor and health monitor from Peak; ECG, heart rhythm notifications and blood pressure insights only with the WHOOP MG on Life

Battery life was my biggest 4.0 frustration

With the Whoop 4.0 I had to charge every 4–5 days. Doesn’t sound dramatic, but: you charge on the wrist with a small magnetic puck that likes to slip. And if you forget to charge, you go into training with an empty battery.

With the 5.0 I charge once every 10–12 days. In practice. That’s a real quality-of-life difference — not a “nice to have”, but noticeably less friction in everyday life.

The accuracy problem in the first weeks — an honest assessment

This is where it gets interesting: in the first weeks after launch, many users — me included — noticed deviations in the readings. HRV values sometimes seemed too high, and Recovery Scores were occasionally inconsistent compared with what I knew from my 4.0 baseline.

Whoop communicated this itself and rolled out several firmware updates. As of today, accuracy has improved significantly. My HRV values are consistently back at my known baseline level (what “baseline” means methodologically is explained in the HRV guide), and the Recovery Scores match how I actually feel again.

But I’m still mentioning it — anyone who bought shortly after launch and found the first weeks frustrating was completely right. Whoop shipped this a bit too early.

Is the upgrade from 4.0 worth it?

For active 4.0 users: If the battery life annoys you or you charge daily — yes, the upgrade pays off. $49 for existing members is fair for what you get. (According to WHOOP support you can alternatively upgrade without a fee by extending your membership by 12 months.)

For new customers: The Whoop 5.0 is clearly the right entry point. There’s no longer any reason to start fresh with a 4.0.

For 4.0 users without battery issues: No pressure. The core functions — HRV tracking, Recovery Score, sleep analysis — are functionally equivalent on both devices.

What I know now

After both devices, my conclusion is: Whoop is the system, not the device. The value lies in months of consistent data, in the baseline that builds up, in the moment when you see a bad Recovery Score and know: “I should have gone to bed earlier yesterday.” How far you actually get with two years of this data — and where the methodological limits are — I worked through in 35 supplements after 2 years of HRV tracking.

The 5.0 is the better device. But Whoop 4.0 users who don’t actively use the system won’t gain anything from the hardware switch alone.
