Oura Ring Gen 3 in 2026: Still Worth Buying, Even Used? Support, Membership and How It Differs from Ring 4 and Ring 5

· 9 min read

Transparency: This blog has never owned or tested an Oura Ring, including the Gen3. There are no first-party measurements and no first-hand wearing experience here. The article is based on Oura’s support pages and blog posts, Oura’s German store pages (accessed 16 Oct 2026), a launch report by Computer Bild and a validation study in Sleep Medicine. All sources are listed at the end. This article contains no affiliate links. More on methodology

Key points

  • No longer sold: Oura no longer sells Gen3 rings or chargers. If you want one, you buy used.
  • Still supported: latest Gen3 firmware on 20 Apr 2026; the software features announced in May 2026 are meant to come to the Gen3 too, according to Oura.
  • Membership still required for the full feature set: €5.99 a month or €69.99 a year. A seller’s lifetime membership does not transfer.
  • Used-purchase risks named by Oura: no warranty for second-hand buyers from unauthorised sellers, the battery counts as a consumable, rings can be disabled.
  • New alternative: Oura Ring 4 from Oura for €265.30 instead of €379 (16 Oct 2026), Ring 5 for €429.

What the Oura Ring Gen 3 is

Oura announced the third generation in October 2021. According to Computer Bild, Oura shipped it from mid-November 2021, in Germany at €314 (Silver, Black) and €419 (Stealth, and Gold as a limited edition). The Gen3 also introduced Oura’s paid membership.

According to Oura support, the Gen3 came in two designs, Horizon and Heritage, with Black, Brushed Titanium, Gold, Rose Gold, Silver and Stealth finishes. Compared with the Gen2 it added, among other things:

  • green and red LEDs on top of infrared LEDs, enabling daytime and workout heart rate,
  • an extra temperature sensor for cycle features and improved illness detection,
  • an extra infrared sensor meant to compensate when the ring is not optimally aligned,
  • a titanium shell with PVD or DLC coating and a non-metallic inner moulding.

At launch Computer Bild listed sizes 6 to 13, water resistance to 100 metres and, according to Oura, a week of battery life.

Can you still buy a new Gen3?

No. Oura’s support page on previous generations (last updated 1 Oct 2026) says plainly: “The Gen3 ring and charger are no longer available for purchase.” So Oura no longer sells new chargers either.

On the German price comparison site billiger.de, a search for “Oura Ring Gen 3” on 16 Oct 2026 only returned accessories such as protective covers, no rings. We found no reliable used prices, so we don’t quote any.

Support and updates: how long will the Gen3 keep getting them?

Firmware: according to Oura’s firmware list (last updated 5 Oct 2026), the Gen3’s most recent updates were:

VersionDateContent according to Oura
3.4.320 Apr 2026internal optimisations and bug fixes
3.4.010 Dec 2025workout tracking improvements
3.3.46 Oct 2025workout tracking, small power optimisations

For comparison: the Ring 4 received updates much more often over the same period, most recently version 2.12.5 on 14 Sep 2026.

New features: alongside the Ring 5, Oura announced new software on 28 May 2026, including Health Radar, AI-enabled medical guidance with partner Counsel Health, and GLP-1 Insights. According to Oura’s blog these features “will be available to Oura Members with Oura Ring Gen3 and newer models”. The post does not say whether each of them is offered in every country. The Oura Advisor coach also runs on Gen3 and newer with an active membership, according to Oura support.

End of support: Oura has only explicitly ended customer support and updates for the first generation. It gives no end date for the Gen3. That is no guarantee it will stay that way.

The membership: what the Gen3 does without it

According to Oura, the membership applies to Gen3 and newer. It costs €5.99 a month or €69.99 a year in the EU. Without an active membership, Oura says you only see:

  • the three daily scores Readiness, Activity and Sleep,
  • battery level, profile and settings,
  • the Explore content.

The API is locked without a membership, but you can still download your data via the Membership Hub. Only the old Gen2 needs no membership at all, according to Oura.

Lifetime membership: according to Computer Bild, owners of an earlier generation who upgraded to the Gen3 at launch received a lifetime membership. It is worthless to a used buyer: according to Oura, the membership is tied to the Oura account, not to the physical ring. It stays with the seller.

What exactly remains without a subscription, and which rings need none at all, is covered in our comparison of Oura alternatives without a subscription.

Buying used: what Oura itself says

Oura warns against buying outside authorised channels on several support pages. The points:

  • No warranty for second-hand buyers. According to Oura support, the warranty covers the original end-user purchaser. Second-hand purchases from unauthorised resellers are explicitly excluded. For purchases from sellers such as eBay, Facebook Marketplace or Vinted, Oura says it cannot guarantee condition or functionality.
  • The battery is a wear part. Oura treats batteries as consumables not covered by the warranty. All batteries lose capacity over time, according to Oura. The “up to seven days” applies to new Gen3 rings. A ring from 2021 or 2022 will last less; how much less depends on the individual ring.
  • Rings can be disabled. According to Oura support (last updated 7 Oct 2026), Oura can deactivate a ring if it is linked to a warranty replacement, a loss or theft report, an issue with the original purchase, or a safety concern. A disabled ring can no longer pair with the app. Rings from unauthorised resellers may, according to Oura, be stolen, reported lost or associated with payment fraud.

What to clarify before buying used: whether the ring is still paired to the seller’s app and will be removed before handover, whether there is a receipt from an authorised seller, whether a matching Gen3 charger is included (Oura no longer sells new ones), and which size it is. Oura sizes differ slightly from standard US ring sizes, according to Oura, and there are no half sizes.

The maths: used Gen3 vs new Ring 4

Since we have no reliable used price, here is the calculation to fill in yourself, with the annual plan over three years (3 × €69.99 = €209.97):

The upshot: the closer a Gen3 offer gets to €265, the less there is to be said for it. A subscription-free ring like the RingConn Gen 3 costs €369 according to the manufacturer, with no running costs; the Samsung Galaxy Ring started at €209.99 at German retailers on 16 Oct 2026 but only works with Android. Ring 4: Oura describes Smart Sensing as technology that adapts to your finger, with sensors recessed into the inside of the ring. At 5 to 8 days of battery according to Oura it is roughly on a par with the Gen3, but covers more sizes.

Ring 5: on sale since 4 June 2026; according to Oura it is 40% smaller than the Ring 4, with redesigned sensing and 6 to 9 days of battery. It has its own size chart. Prices, sizes, storage and every difference from the Ring 4 are covered in Oura Ring 5: price, differences from Ring 4, membership. How accurately does the Gen3 measure sleep?

The largest study on the Gen3 is by Svensson et al. (Sleep Medicine 2024): 96 healthy adults in Japan, up to three nights of ambulatory polysomnography, Gen3 with Oura’s sleep staging algorithm 2.0. Result: 91.7 to 91.8% agreement on sleep versus wake, 73 to 75% of wake periods detected correctly, and 75.5% (light sleep) to 90.6% (REM) for sleep stages. For total sleep time and for light and deep sleep, the authors found no significant differences from the sleep lab. According to its competing interests statement, the study received financial support from Oura.

How these figures compare with other devices and independent studies is covered in our guide Sleep tracking and better sleep.

Who a Gen3 still makes sense for in 2026

  • Yes, if you can get a Gen3 very cheaply from a trustworthy source, with charger and a traceable history, and you are happy to pay the Oura membership anyway.
  • Probably not, if the offer comes close to the current Ring 4 price of €265.30. Then Oura sells you a new ring with a warranty.
  • No, if you don’t want a subscription. Then any Oura from Gen3 onwards is the wrong choice; look at the Oura alternatives without a subscription.
  • Be careful if the seller can’t show where the ring came from. Oura can disable such rings.

Verdict

In 2026 the Oura Ring Gen 3 is a discontinued model with surprisingly long support: new firmware as late as April 2026, and new software features coming to the Gen3 too, according to Oura. You can no longer buy it new, and used it carries three risks Oura names itself: no warranty, an aged battery and possible disabling. The membership remains. As long as Oura sells the Ring 4 for €265.30, a Gen3 only makes sense well below that.
